Hyundai Gets Sued for 40 MPG Failure

Remember that lawsuit a while back about how the Honda Civic hybrid doesn't get the mileage claimed by the automaker? Well, it looks like similar accusations against the Hyundai Elantra are reaching the courts.

According to Reuters, Elantra owner Louis Bird is suing the automaker for having to pay more in fuel costs than what he should be if the sedan lived up to its 40 mpg. Hyundai, for its part, replied by referencing government tests and magazines articles.

I don't agree with the comment by SueMe that it's pathetic to sue Hyundai for false claims about fuel consumption. I do very much agree that anyone suing anyone else for no other reason except to gain some cash is very wrong, it's a huge problem in the USA. But I believe this is the real problem: Hyundai is lying about fuel consumption which is cheating and unfair against Ford for example who in my experience does not lie and plays fair with their claims. My Escape exceeds the claimed mpg rating much of the time as does my brother's Taurus. So it's unfair competition to make a false claim on TV and gain the sales against a fair competitor. It's also true that a particular Camaro, BMW or any brand/model might not yeild precisely the same mpg as another one of the exact same specification. There is a variation to some extent. But Hyundai ought to be challenged when they make a false claim and this guy just did that. I wouldn't have sued, but somebody did and I'm sort of glad he did. Hyundai should be a bit more honest and by the way, my experience with Hyundai cars (rented) were much the same as the guy who's suing; I didn't get such great mileage. Same goes for my wife's Mazda which drinks fuel around town compared to the window sticker. I don't feel compelled to sue over it but no sympathy for Mazda if someone else does.

if you would only drive conserverly,perhaps you would achieve the stated mpg. I own a 2011 sonata driving with cruise control set at 55 miles/according to the computer the stated mpg to my surprise was 42 mpg, no complaints here.
