I fondly remember the day in high school me and a group of buddies took some kid's original 60's VW Beetle and picked it up and rotated it sideways in its parking spot and lay in wait and watched (and laughed hysterically) as he couldn't get out and had to wait until at least one of the two cars next to him left, but this "Smart tossing" phenomenon going on in Amsterdam is a bit over the top (pun intended, as you'll see in a bit).
DutchAmsterdam.nl, an online travel guide to Amsterdam and the Netherlands, is reporting that the latest fad by vandals/hooligans in the canal city is to "tip" or otherwise lift, and eventually push Smart city cars over the rails and into the numerous waterways of the city.
The "so-called ‘Smart tossing’ takes place mainly during the weekend, when many youths are out for a night on the town" says the site, and police have been reluctant to release this information to the press for fear that it would lead to copy-cat incidents. No word on the exact amount of Smarts that have recently taken a dip (i.e., got totaled via water damage), but an employee of Smart Center Amsterdam confirmed the company has recently been confronted with it ‘a number of times.’
