Trying to find out more information about Toyota's soon-to-be recall of millions of Toyota and Lexus vehicles, we see Cars.com jumps in and explains the problem. Summary below. Also, see the excellent photo we found of the floormat and gas pedal assembly -- it immediately makes it obvious what is likely the culprit, and the seriousness of it.
In short, Cars.com claims the floormats on effected Toyota cars can get unhooked from their little plastic mounting tabs in the rear, and slide forward. Once out of their original position, the effects of foot movement over time can apparently result in the mat moving forward and up in the footwell area, potentially jamming the edge of the floormat with the bottom lip of the accelerator pedal, resulting in a pedal that won't return when the driver lifts off. Looking at the image it looks like the pedal has the greatest chance of becoming stuck if it's "floored," or at least significantly depressed. Compounding the problem, claims Car.com, is the complicated ignition and shifter mechanisms in the cars which can be hard to operate when in a panic situation. [The full scoop]
