During this time of recession and summer high gas prices, it'd be in our interest to learn how to conserve fuel. When you drive aggressively or inattentively, among other things, you're wasting gas. We here at IAG have compiled a list of things to help you save money and up to 33% in gas costs.
#1 - Drive Intelligently Driving properly and cautiously could help you anywhere from 5 to 30% in fuel economy, and if you do the math, from $.15 to $.80 per gallon.
#2 - Follow the Speed Limit It’s safest to drive the proper posted speed limit anyway. Keep in mind, on the highway, miles per gallon typically decreases after 60 MPH in most cars, costing you more per mile. Driving the speed limit could save you anywhere from 8 to 25% in fuel economy, and $.15 to $.55 per gallon.
#3 - Clean Your Car Technically, any excess weight causes your car to be less efficient. Remove any unnecessary items from your trunk and cargo areas. Every additional 100 pounds could reduce your MPG by 2%. Removing excess weight from your car could save you anywhere from 2 to 6% in fuel economy, and $.02 to $.05 per gallon.
#4 - Avoid Idling When your car idles, you are wasting gas. Think of it this way: idling gets you zero MPG.
#5 - Cruise ControlUse cruise control to help you maintain your car at a constant speed and engine rate. When driving on the highway, even slightly decreasing than increasing your speed many times over the course of a trip will gradually lower MPGs.
#6 - Overdrive When you put your transmission in overdrive (the highest gear you have), you lessen the engine's speed as well as decrease noise which in turn increases fuel economy.
