Last year, Pontiac added the decidedly unexciting G3 to the lineup in order to round out offerings in Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealers and we predicted it would be anything but a hit. The latest sales data from GM has not only confirmed that prediction, but exposed it as an understatement.

A little digging by The Wall Street Journal has revealed that Pontiac sold a dismal 141 G3s in March. That number is sad by itself, but it's really ugly when you give it context. GM has about 2700 Pontiac dealers in the U.S. and the math tells us that only one in every 19 Pontiac dealers actually sold a G3 in March, and that's only if they each only sold one. If any Pontiac dealer moved more than one G3 off the lot, it would mean that even fewer Pontiac dealers were actually able to sell the car.

If that statistic weren't bad enough, the Journal also discovered that there are 3479 G3s still sitting on dealer lots nationwide. At the snails-pace they're currently selling at, that supply of G3s will last 617 days, or nearly two years, without any additional units being built. In fact, if GM stopped building G3s right now and sales refused to pick up, the last 2009 model G3s would be finally rolling off dealer lots some time in December 2010, long after they should've been replaced with 2010 and 2011 models.
