Ford Motor Company is looking to cut down on its vehicles' weights, and will be using lightweight magnesium and aluminum in the liftgate of its 2010 Lincoln MKT. Using magnesium and aluminum in the liftgate's construction will make it approximately 40% lighter compared with standard steel, while maintaining the structural strength needed to meet safety requirements. A net weight savings of 22 lbs can be attributed to the new liftgate alone.

The magnesium and aluminum liftgate makes the 2010 Lincoln MKT the first vehicle produced in North America to use such a construction. The liftgate's inner panel is made of magnesium, while the outer panel is aluminum.
