Nissan wholeheartedly winds back the clock to its sports car days with the 370Z, BMW is on the brink of slowly casting away America's repugnance towards diesels and Hyundai of all carmakers brings back the fun and affordable RWD turbocharged coupe.
Of all the scantily-clad models to fantasize over automotive decadence to drool at from behind the plastic tape at this years LA Auto Show, the abovementioned trio caught my attention the most. Sure the first civilized automobile Lotus has ever built was on display as was Ford's nicely-redesigned pony car and a sweet Lambo as well, but neither of these or any of the other unmentioned have quite the same impact and groundbreaking aura surrounding them as that three.
Now even if you are only half-heartedly following today's automotive happenings, you will be familiar with that threesome to some degree, to be sure. But then you might well be stuck in the same predicament as I am: Which to pick as a favorite.
First, the Nissan 370Z is smaller, lighter and faster than the 350Z (a win on all counts), and looks amazing. All at a decent price (starting at around $30,000) to boot. Second, we've always been familiar with and loved (European) diesels and appreciated them for what they are (gobs of torque, great gas mileage, no smog requirements which facilitate cheap tuning, etc.) so it's no surprise that a proper diesel sports car -- from BMW nonetheless -- finally coming stateside has got us all hot and bothered. Third, we greatly miss the Datsun Z's and Nissan 240's of the past along with the Toyota Corolla AE86 and of course still fiercely love the current Miata (which thankfully hasn't fallen by the wayside) so our attraction to affordable and fun-to-drive RWD import coupes is no secret.
So then the question of course is: Which of the three takes the cake for "coolest car" at this years LA Auto Show? Help me out will ya? I want 'em all, but must make up my mind, if only to ease my thoughts. What do YOU guys think? Or am I completely out of my mind and have picked all the wrong ones?
